Abstract

This article examined the challenges bedevilling women NGOs in Zaria  Local Government in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Qualitative research method  was used to generate data. Primary data was sourced from interviews.  Interviews were conducted with 113 respondents across thirteen wards in  Zaria LG. Secondary data was obtained from journal publications, and extant  literature. Results indicates that although most NGOs have their perculiar  challenges but the most common challenges to all the NGOs are the shortage  of internally generated revenue and the inability to access external source of  funds within and outside the country. This has imposed difficulties to most  women NGOs in their determinations to complement government’ efforts in  the provision services to local communities in the LG. The study discovered  that if women NGOs in Zaria LG. are properly organized they can serve as a  vehicle for grassroots development. The study concludes that despite the  numerous challenges facing Women Non-Governmental Organisations in  Zaria Local  Government, they will continue to  contribute significantly to  filling the major local development gaps that government failed to fill. The  paper recommended more enlightenment on strategies to access other souces  of funds within and outside the country.
