Abstract

Bauchi State Government has implemented various policies and programme including MDGs  programme with a view to improve primary healthcare services. However, despite the  aforementioned commitments by the Government of Bauchi State, record shows that the State has  one of the lowest antenatal attendance and hospital deliveries compared to national and global  indices. The Bauchi State Government Strategic Health Development Plan, (BSGSHDP) 2019  estimated that only 25% of pregnant women that registered for Ante Natal Care actually deliver in  the healthcare facilities. Similarly, the United Nation Population Fund (UNPF) (2019) revealed  that only 43.8% of women of Bauchi state received antenatal care during pregnancy across the  state. Therefore, this study assessed the effect of the implementation of MDG 5 on primary  healthcare facilities in Bauchi state. The study adopted content analysis, where the data were  gathered from various secondary sources. The study revealed that implementation of MDG 5 has  significantly increased the number of primary healthcare facilities in Bauchi state, through the  establishment and equipping Maternity Clinics, Primary Health Care Centres and Health Posts.  Therefore, the study recommended that despite the improvement recorded on primary healthcare  facilities in Bauchi state as a result of the implementation of MDG 5, more commitments are needed  by the Government of Bauchi state towards provision of primary healthcare facilities such as  establishment and renovation of Primary Health Care Centres, Maternity Clinics and Health Posts  as well as equipping them with adequate facilities for proper diagnosis and other clinical services  so as to sustain the improvement recorded in the area of wide coverage of healthcare delivery.
