Effects of Insecurity on Agricultural Activities in Katsina State, Nigeria.

Abstract

This paper examines the effects of insecurity on agricultural activities in Katsina  State. The main issue in this work focuses on the reoccurrence of insecurity  manifested in kidnapping and cattle rustling in rural areas of Katsina State where  farming is the major preoccupation of the people which virtually has affected  farmers, leading to food security. This paper examines insecurity on agricultural  activities in Katsina State and possible policy responses put in place by government  to curtail the menace so as to improve agricultural activities. The study is  qualitative in nature with primary data collected through interviews, while  secondary data was sourced from documents. The study found that challenges such  as: paucity of funds, inadequate facilities for security operatives, low motivations  on the part of the security personnel and lack of synergy among the stakeholders of  the states constituted a cog in the wheel of progress. The paper recommends that  Government should provide funds and facilities for security operations which will  motivate security personnel to put more efforts in the fight against insecurity in the  affected states.
