Assessment of Community Based Organizations Activities and Community Development in Lagos State, Nigeria

The study investigated the contributions of Community Based Organizations to the development of Lagos State. Primary and secondary data were utilized for this study. Primary data were collected through the administration of questionnaire. Secondary data were obtained from books, academic journals, official documents and the Internet. The study population was 1,200. Multi-sampling technique was used for this study. At the first stage, one local government area was selected from each senatorial districts of Lagos state using stratified random sampling. At the second stage, one community was selected from each local government using purposive sampling. At third stage, one community- based organization was selected from the community. And at the last stage, 150 respondents were randomly selected which correspond to 10% of the study population. The study revealed that provision of transformer and electric poles has positive and significant effect on electrification of community (t=1.98, F<0.05), construction of town hall was found to be negatively insignificant for providing avenue for congregation and deliberation by communities (t=-0.46, F>0.05), rehabilitation of feeder roads has no significant effect on the rural dwellers to transport goods and services to urban market (t=-0.73, F>0.05) Construction of drainage facility has not significantly reduced flooding in the rural areas (t=-0.52, F>0.05). Rehabilitation and construction healthcare facility has not significantly reduced epidemics in rural areas (t=-0.56, F>0.05), Provision of community well or portable water has not significantly improved sanitation in rural communities (t=-0.59, F>0.05). The study concluded that there is nexus between the existence of Community Based Organization and Community Development in Lagos State.
