Keywords:
Counter-Terrorism, Hard Military, Insurgency, Soft Social StrategiesAbstract
Terrorism and counter measures against it have been a source of debate. This paper adds to the discourse on the antecedent, trends and strategies to contain terrorism in Nigeria. It delves into the evolution of the Boko Haram and various approaches adopted to defeat insurgents by the country. The introduction of a multi-pronged approach that attempts to defeat the group militarily and the “soft” dimension aimed at ameliorating the social and economic conditions that gave rise to terrorism is discussed. Underlying factors like lack of political will and graft were identified as factors militating against the defeat of terrorism. There is need to vigorously apply counter-terrorism measures to overcome all obstacles in the path to achieving the war against terrorism in Nigeria.
